Syllabus
Mrs. Richards – Room 20
Assignments:
Most assignments will be turned in either on the day assigned or at the beginning of the hour the following day. Some assignments will be kept in a classroom notebook. These notebooks will be used for daily sentence corrections, vocabulary, journal writings, and other assignments. You will periodically receive credit for maintaining these notebooks, so be sure to always do your work and keep them in the classroom.
Papers and Projects:
You will be required to write some formal essays using the writing process. You will receive due dates for both the rough drafts and final copy. You will also be required to do one or more projects that will be announced later on.
Tests and Quizzes:
Periodically your mastery of skills, literature, and terms
taught will be evaluated.
Grades:
Grades are determined by total points earned. Points will be earned by quizzes, tests, daily assignments, oral reports, projects, and class participation. All students are expected to participate in class activities and discussions as well as small group activities and discussions. Bringing required materials to class daily is also a requirement. Each day students are expected to have paper, writing utensil, and required books and assignments.
Food and Beverages:
Student may bring water, milk, or juice to class every day. Also, HEALTHY snacks such as fruit or crackers (NOT candy or chips) may be brought to class as long as they are not messy or distracting to other students. STUDENTS WHO ABUSE THESE PRIVILEGES WILL LOSE THEM.
Tardiness and Hall
Passes:
With exception of the last periods of the day, student will be dismissed from each class by the teacher, not by the bell. Punctuality is important; tardiness is not tolerated. Any tardy, except those accompanied by a note from the office or another teacher, will be counted against you. The third and fourth tardy will each result in ten minutes of detention; the fifth and any further thereafter will each earn you two hours of detention (per student handbook). Personal business, such as using the restroom or the telephone, must be conducted between classes or during lunch, not during class. Students will receive two emergency bathroom passes to use, but those students who choose to go the restroom on their own time, not during class, will receive bonus points at the end of each grading period. Anytime students must leave the classroom, they are required to have a pass. They also should sign-out in the classroom log.
Extra Credit:
Students will be given opportunity for extra credit. However, students must not rely on only extra credit to improve grades. Extra credit will not usually be available during the last two weeks of each grading period, so you should take advantage of it when it is offered.
